Introduction:
“Personality is a dynamic Organization within the individual of those psycho-physical systems that determine his unique adjustment to his environment" — Allport.
Personality is the totality of one’s behaviour towards oneself as well as others. It is ubiquitous, self-conscious and unique.
Nature of Personality:
1. Unique -
Personality is something unique and specific. No two individuals not even identical twins behave precisely in the same way over period of time.
2. Self-conscious -
Personality is self-conscious. The man is described as having a personality when the idea of ‘self’ enters into his consciousness. H.R. Bhatia (1986) writes. “We do not attribute personality to a dog and even a child cannot be described as a personality because it has only a vague sense of personal identity”.
3. Ubiquitous of a person -
Personality includes everything about a person. It includes all the behaviour patterns whether conative, cognitive or affective and covers both the conscious, subconscious and unconscious activities.
4. Dynamic -
Personality is dynamic and always in the process of modification. Through struggle with the environment as well as inner forces throughout life, one has to bring modifications and changes in his personality .
5. Product of Heredity and environment -
Every personality is the product of heredity and environment. Both contribute significantly towards the development of the child's personality.
6. Product of learning and acquision - Learning and acquision or experience contribute towards growth and development of one's personality. Every personality is the end product of this process.
Conclusion:
Personality may be understood as the sum total of one's way of behaving towards oneself as well others. It also predicts one's nature of behavior as to how will one behave in a particular situation and one's pattern of adjustment to the everchanging forces of environment.
